If you’ve uploaded materials about this year’s klezKanada to YouTube, flickr, del.icio.us, etc. I am encouraging the use of the tag “klezkanada07″. I’ve sent emails to a few people who uploaded videos to YouTube so far. I’m going to try to get some stuff up on flickr and delicious of my own, tonight.

I also uploaded the newsletter pdfs to the KlezKanada site, so those should be available as soon as Bob or I has time to add them to the page template. If you want newsletters sooner, here are the URLs:

Thanks for everything,

It seems appropriate that Klezkanada occurs just prior to the Jewish New Year. Though I’m sure this was more by necessity than by design, it nevertheless serves the purpose of reminding us of what we could be feeling.
In Judaism, we are instructed in the daily prayers and in the “Song of Songs” to come before Him singing and dancing. The joy expressed at Klezkanada in a spirit of inclusiveness and kindness acts as a beacon. We are reminded how joyful life can be.
My hope is that this spirit will stay with us in the year to come to make this world a better, peaceful and more joyous place.

Budowitz bandleader Josh Horowitz has requested that this notice be posted:

Dear Klez Kanada campers who bought the new Budowitz Live CD:
My guilty apologies to you for making you pay 55 Canadian dollars for the
double CD. The CD was supposed to sell less but I accidentally put the
number of CDs I brought with me (55) as the price, which turns out to be
unconscionably high by any standards.

I would like to refund each person 16 U.S. Dollars (the difference minus the
20% commission taken by the vendor) please let me know who you are with a
short email to me.

Cabaret thoughts

After an incredible “groyse kontsert” last night (Theo Bikel is still amazing, and I don’t even like that kind of music) we retired to the Cabaret to check out the Crown Royal and music.

I was far too sleepy to stay long, but while I was there, the quality was uniformly astounding (except for the Crown Royal—I’m going back to the Oban I brought with). The variety was equally astounding. A duo did a klezmer tune featuring saxaphone and amazing scat/voices, with the voices going from scat to didjideroo. Not your usual klezmer. A very, very young girl with a very, very mature voice did a broadway song. Itzik Gottesman, my favorite פֿאָרװערטס reporter did some wonderful Yiddish folk songs which I hadn’t heard (except for one that his mother wrote). He was preceded by a klezmer boogie band called “The Lithuanian Empire” (sp?) that I expect to review over on the KlezmerShack sometime soon. Very good. Some more Yiddish song and I called it a night.

For people like me whose favorite music is whatever wasn’t playing the song before, the Cabaret is perfect.

One of these days I am going to discover just how fast you can go on Canadian highways, especially through the small towns which post those nominal “50km” signs) before a mountie pulls you over and gives you a ticket. This trip was lucky. And yet, as usual, between distance, traffic slowdowns—did you realize that starting KlezKanada on a weekday, as we’re doing this year—means driving through Montreal during rush hour (for many of us). Imagine a major world city without a ring road. Imagine that there is no less traffic; rather, it crowds through the same rivers of cars through the city.

In any event, the weather is good, if chilly. The music in the Retreat Center is excellent and hot. The Oban in my room is warming, but distant.
Oh, and did I mention that Internet connectivity is working, and has continued to work all evening? We’ll see how long this lasts.

So far, I have seen dozens of old friends, none for long enough. And I’ve met a slew of new-to-me people. Wherever I go—the stairwell, the lecture halls—any hall—people are playing. And in the main Retreat Center hall, people are gathered in the vicinity of the noshes shoozing and catching up.
